Photos: Peter's Retirement Celebration (1)

The people that usually snap photos of events at St. Mary's were so busy with the events of May 31 that we don't have photos of Peter's retirement service or reception. We saw a number of people taking photos today - we are asking if you have photos that you would be willing to share with Peter and the St. Mary's community, please send them to photos@st-marys-episcopal.org. Thank you!!!

The photos below were taken while the choir was singing at the Sunday evening reception

400 Posts!

We usually don't post self congratulatory materials, but we wanted to note that we have now posted 400 items in this blog in the its first two years of operation. Your editors have tried to make this blog relevant and timely, and keeping it up to date has been a major goal for us.

Letter to Parish on Interim Priest

The following letter was mailed to the parish today, with additional details on our Interim Priest Margaret Schwarzer's arrival at St. Mary's, and information on office hours/pastoral care starting June 1:

Vestry_to_Church_2009-May-28.pdf

Here is an excerpt discussing schedules and pastoral care for the summer months:
Margaret will officially join us on June 1 and be at St. Mary’s on a part-time basis through the summer. Margaret is finishing an assignment as Interim at Christ Church in Andover, where she is committed to be on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays through the end of June. Given this prior arrangement, vacation schedules, and the summer slowdown at St. Mary’s, the Vestry and Margaret agreed that a half-time schedule through the summer months made sense for all.

For the month of June, Margaret will maintain office hours at St. Mary’s during the week on Mondays from 9am to 1pm, and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 5pm. Sunday services during the month of June will be performed by the Reverend Gwen Buehrens; Gwen will also be available for pastoral care if Margaret is unavailable.

For the months of July and August, Margaret will perform the Sunday services at 10am and also be available during the week. (As a reminder there is no 8am service in July and August.) Office hours for these summer months will be posted in advance.

If there are pastoral emergencies that come up during the summer (e.g. serious illness) please call the parish office at 617-527-4769. If this is outside of parish office hours, you can contact Margaret directly on her mobile phone at 617-733-0661.

Margaret will transition to full-time at St. Mary’s starting in September.

Interim Priest: Margaret Schwarzer (Updated)

The Wardens and Vestry of St. Mary's announce that Margaret Schwarzer has accepted our call to be our Interim Priest, beginning June 1.

About The Reverend Ms. Margaret Schwarzer
Margaret is no stranger to New England; she is a graduate of Smith College and Yale Divinity School, and has spent the last ten years of her ministry as the Episcopal Chaplain at Boston University. While at B.U., Margaret also served as the founder and director of The Micah Project, a 9 month program of service and vocational discernment for recent college graduates. During her tenure as director, she led 36 young adult interns into urban parishes, peace and justice programs, and chaplaincies where they contributed over 2,560 hours of service per year. Margaret has also served parishes and chaplaincies in Washington, D.C., Princeton, New Jersey, and New Haven, CT. She served as an Assistant Minister at Trinity Church, Princeton, N.J., and worked as the Assistant Chaplain at Princeton University. This year, she has been serving at Christ Church, Andover, where she is the Sabbatical Interim Priest. At each of these parishes, she has had a special interest in fostering excellent adult education programs.

“Behold,” says the Christ, “I make all things new!”
When she was asked about her favorite quotation from scripture, she replied that she continues to be moved by Christ’s promise to make all things new.  She said, ““One of the reasons I follow Jesus Christ is because in both the joys and sorrows of this life, I witness the resurrection and redemption Christ brings us. Christ calls us to practice resurrection by staying open to the beauty and sacredness of our own lives, and by keeping our hearts open to “the new things” being done around us, whether they be in our partners, our children, our neighbors, or the stranger down the street.” She told me that she welcomes the opportunity to join us for another “new thing”- preparing our church and our hearts to welcome the next Rector of St. Mary’s.

Margaret’s Family
Margaret has been an ordained Episcopal Priest for sixteen years, and in the last eight of these years, she has been married to her husband, Jon, who is an active member of the Unitarian Church. They have a son, Benjamin, five, who plans to participate in the St. Mary’s Church School, and they have four older children, Rachel, Asa, Jonas, and Rebecca, Margaret’s step children, who are Unitarians. Jonas, is graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design this May, and Rebecca attends Colorado College. During family free time, you will find them skiing in the White Mountains, sailing and swimming in ocean water, and hiking around New England.

Rector Search Committee Announced

At its May 19 meeting, the Vestry formally approved the following slate for the Search Committee:

Tricia Blank, Vivian Brocard (chair), Stephen Campbell, Jean Dalton, Jeff Hughes, Martha McGandy, Peter Ramsey, Tom Riley, Mike Stevens, Ann Wessel, Sarah Williamson

The nominating committee prayerfully considered over 25 people for the search committee; many outstanding candidates could not be included simply because the group size would have become too large.

Finding our next rector will be one of the single most important tasks facing our church community in preparing for St. Mary's third century. The Vestry would like to thank each of these people for the time and dedication they will devote to this vital task.

Letter to Parish on Rector Transition

Ice Cream Social on Sunday June 14

As you may know we will have extended receptions and luncheons after Sunday services on both May 31 (for Peter's retirement celebration) and on June 7 (for the parish meeting to start the search process for a new rector).

At the Vestry meeting last night, we discussed that having yet another all parish luncheon just one week later - the Annual Picnic scheduled for June 14 - might be too much.

So, we have decided instead that just for this year we will have a lower-key Ice Cream Social following the June 14 10AM service instead. This is also the last day of Sunday school for the year so our children can still celebrate in style. And of course all parish members, friends, and guests are invited.

Update on Peter's Retirement Celebration

Hello Everyone,

Well, the time is quickly drawing near for our final day with Peter and Abbie. Paul Pyzowski and I have been completely overwhelmed, once again, with the generosity of St. Mary’s people, especially in the giving of their time, talent and treasures.

I especially wanted to thank everyone who has donated generously to provide a retirement gift to Peter and Abbie. To date we have received close to $10,000, all of which will go to Peter and Abbie. Costs for all the festivities have been generously donated and paid for separately by members of St. Mary’s. We are extremely grateful to all who have contributed and supported this effort to make this day of celebration so very special. Your generosity is above and beyond anything we could have hoped for. God is good!

To those of you who have already given, or whose contribution may be on its way, we extend a heartfelt thanks. If you have not contributed and still wish to do so, you may make out a check to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Please write “Celebration Fund” on the memo line, so Norm Budge will know where to place it. Please send it to Denise or my name (Lucille Rossignol) at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 258 Concord Street, Newton Lower Falls, MA 02462. Phone number at the office is 617-527-4769.

Paul and I look forward to sharing this day of celebration with all of you. It is coming way too soon……

Blessings to all,
Lucille Rossignol

Photos: Babson Night and Youth Party

Thank you for the great performances yesterday at church and Babson Night! I was very proud of each of you, and the way you represented St. Mary's. Many people at church told me how much they appreciated your reading and singing. Congratulations!

Also, a big thank you to the Williamson's for hosting the party for Peter and the youth last night. The pizza and ice cream were great, and it was fun to be together with Abbie and Peter as they get ready to start a new chapter in their lives. We're going to miss them!

St. Mary's: The Final Frontier

As many of you know, the new Star Trek movie opened last week to strong reviews and box office receipts. Our own Peter Chase clearly anticipated this when he had the above picture taken.

We are still looking for photos and other memorabilia from Peter's last seventeen years with us to share at his upcoming retirement parties. Especially of interest are photos of Peter with parish members, as well as any news clippings. If you have any you can share, please either drop them off at the church office or contact Lucille Rossignol.

Photos: Walk for Hunger

John and Anne Turtle at the finish of the 2009 Walk for Hunger

"Under partly cloudy skies and trees in bloom, 44,000 people stepped out in Project Bread’s annual Walk for Hunger on Sunday, May 3. The 20-mile Walk wended through Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Watertown and Newton. The event raised $3.8 million and the funds will be given to soup kitchens, food pantries, food banks, and food salvage programs across the state. Fundraising continues through May...

"The Walk for Hunger provides grants for 400 emergency food programs, including soup kitchen, food pantries, food banks, and food salvage organizations. These programs served nearly 43.4 million emergency meals last year to people who had no other place to go. Since 1969, the Walk has spurred 992,800 Walkers to tread 19,898,800 miles to raise over $74 million to help hungry people."
