I love Ash Wednesday. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. It is a day on which I can wear the dark side of myself on my face. It is like a badge. Ashes on one’s forehead are a blessing on one’s curses. For one day of the year the melancholy spirit is sure that defeat comes tomorrow is allowed. It is permitted to cling to death. The breezy optimism and chunky warmth and good cheer to which propriety always calls is left behind for as long as the black smudge holds out between one’s eyes. – James Carroll
