Coronation Anthem Let Thy Hand be Strengthened by G.F. Handel (1685-1759)
On Sunday, November 20 we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, traditionally held on the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year. Before we begin the Advent season of preparation and waiting, we gather to celebrate the reign of Christ and his victory over death. In the Scripture lessons and the music we will hear of God’s justice and mercy, and the hope of eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Let Thy Hand be Strengthened is one of four Coronation Anthems that Handel wrote for the investiture service of King George II and Queen Caroline at Westminster Abbey in 1727. The texts are from the King James Version of the Bible (Psalm 89) and speak of justice, mercy and truth as the guiding principles for the one who sits on the throne. The anthem has three movements – a joyful opening in G Major, a slow movement in e minor, and a final triumphant “Alleluia” – and is scored for choir, organ, strings and oboes.
Please join us this Sunday to celebrate Christ the King and give thanks for our many blessings!
