Christian Education Update – September 19

NEW Sunday School Routine Begins September 19th Sunday School for all kindergarteners through fifth graders begins at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday, starting on September 19th.! All children in kindergarten through grade five are invited to join us for a Godly Play lesson at 9:45 a.m., after which the Sunday School teachers will lead the K-5 children up to the sanctuary to join their families and the parish at the Holy Eucharist and remain for the conclusion of the service. Children who are not yet ready to receive the Eucharist are invited to join their parents at the altar rail to receive a special blessing. Please note the NEW start time – 9:45 a.m.

Our Godly Play program teaches sacred Biblical stories, parables and liturgical actions through story-telling with concrete objects and biblical figures. These durable story-telling materials draw children more deeply into the stories, creating a sacred space in which children are invited to wonder and grow in spiritual relationship to God.

We are seeking adults who are willing to serve as “Greeters” in the Godly Play classrooms on a one-time OR rotating basis throughout the year. Volunteering in this role will give you a closer look at the wonder of Godly Play, but requires only that you greet the children and assist the Godly Play teacher in the classroom. Please speak with Mary Green or Isabel Phillips if you are interested in serving as a Sunday School Greeter this year.

Middle School and Older Youth Please Note: Middle School Class has been Temporarily Suspended In lieu of a Sunday School class for middle school and high school youth, our rector, George Stevens, is organizing a bi-monthly Youth Group. St. Mary’s wishes to thank Jeffrey Hughes for his many years of devoted service in teaching our Sunday School class for middle schoolers and leading/mentoring confirmation classes.

Save the Date! The first big event for our new Youth Group will be a Canoe Trip on the Charles on Saturday, October 2nd from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; ALL middle schoolers are welcome, but St. Mary’s Youth who plan to participate in the 2011 Confirmation process are urged to attend. Adults who would like to chaperone are needed as well! George Stevens will lead a breakfast meeting with bagels, muffins and juice at 8:30 a.m. and then everyone will go over to the Newton Canoe and Kayak Boathouse for the Canoe Trip with the Charles River Deanery. Reservations are required by Wednesday, September 22nd. Please sign up ASAP by speaking with Isabel or George.

Seeking Adult Help with our Youth We are seeking adults who may have an interest in co-leading the Youth group with George Stevens, who brings a wealth of experience with adolescent Christian Education to St. Mary’s. Please contact George if you have an interest in contributing to St. Mary’s in this way.

St. Mary’s is Seeking a Director of Christian Education As many of you may know, Isabel Phillips will be stepping down in her role as Interim Director of Christian Education as of January 1, 2011. If you know of any possible candidates for this position, please speak to George Stevens or Mary Green, our Senior Warden.
