Wellesley family experiments with food-stamp diet

Our own Depeyster family is featured in an article in this week’s Wellesley Townsman titled Wellesley family experiments with food-stamp diet.
It was during a discussion on poverty that Julia de Peyster realized something was wrong. Her oldest son, Toby, 12, didn’t know what a food stamp was. “In the suburbs you can go for years without seeing anybody who doesn’t live like you do,” she said. “I think that was a big eye-opener for me.” As Julia searched for a way to illustrate for her three sons how poverty can impact families, she hatched an idea: she’d try and feed her own family on a food stamp budget for Lent.
